UBC Library joins the IIIF Consortium

By Library Communications on May 31, 2022

UBC Library is now an associate member of the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) Consortium.

IIIF is a set of open standards for delivering high-quality, attributed digital objects online at scale and an international community developing and implementing the IIIF APIs.

IIIF standardizes the delivery of images and audio/visual files from servers to different environments on the web where they can then be viewed and interacted with in many ways.

Joining more than 60 institutions in the IIIF Consortium, UBC Library will help shape the IIIF agenda and drive the development roadmap for an open, international standard alongside a community of forward-thinking global technology leaders.

“The Open Collections viewer uses IIIF for image delivery, enabling interoperability with digital images from other institutions,” says Allan Bell, Associate University Librarian, Digital Programs and Services, “UBC Library contributes to the Open Source Software we use to ensure that core elements of our digital infrastructure will continue to be developed. Joining the IIIF Consortium is a natural step for us given our current investments in DSpace, Archivematica and the Public Knowledge Project.”
