Linda Wensveen has been with UBC since 1972 and is currently the Library Specialist, Borrower Services in charge of course reserves at Koerner Library for Humanities and Social Sciences. She also coordinates various tasks at other UBC Library branches.
In 1972, Linda started working at UBC Library after graduating from secondary school. “The big difference back then was that you learned on the job. Most people didn’t have any background, because there were no library tech programs then – you got into a job and you learned as you went.”
While in secondary school, Linda was quite shy and was looking for a job that would allow her to work with the public to help her break out of her shell. “I figured working in the library, you’re working with students. At least they’re about my age at that point in time, and it would have been an easier adjustment to try and get into an area where it would help me get out of my shell.”
After working at UBC for almost 49 years, Linda has witnessed significant changes at the Library, particularly in the technology. Implementing new course reserve systems at the Library is one example, “I’ve been doing course reserves for about 30 years, so I’ve seen a great change as to how things are done. It was very manual before. In fact, to look up a course reserve article you had to use a microfiche reader… I’ve had to train to retrain others, but still build up my knowledge of the databases themselves. So, it’s always a challenge.”
Something that inspires Linda is working with the diverse UBC community “You learn a lot from places and people. I haven’t done a whole lot of traveling, but I’ve done a fair amount and you just learn different things by talking to people and being out there. It can change your perspective.”
Linda’s advice to new UBC hires is to speak up if you have any questions and to learn from others. “Keep an open mind, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Learn what you can learn from anybody because it’s going to be important down the road whether you’re in the same career or you’re in a totally different career.”
In her free time, Linda enjoys visiting with friends, spending time outdoors and going for walks. “I love to go for walks. I like to be outside when I can. Being with my friends — I still have a group of friends from high school and we get together all the time.”
