A recommendation from report on first-year instructional programs has resulted in the development of online tutorials to supplement, or in some cases replace, instructional programs provided to first year programs.
This recommendation was influenced by the following:
- Focus group discussions outlining the difficulty students found with the amount of content covered in a 50 or 80 minute one-shot library session;
- The need for an online equivalent to the general instruction workshop provided to first year students;
- Support of flexible learning practices, specifically self-paced learning; and,
- Funding considerations.
A partnership was developed between the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses to develop a basic library skills tutorial that would cover understanding paper requirements, developing a topic, and accessing and analyzing resources. The tutorial is currently being used in all ENGL 100 sessions for the Okanagan campus and in all ASTU 100 sessions for the Vancouver campus.
The tutorial has also has a test piece that can be added directly to instructors’ Connect courses to ensure student completion and retention of the tutorials objectives.
