The quest for hidden gem study spaces at UBC Library with Elisha Facundo

By phoebe chan on August 30, 2022

ELISHA FACUNDO,

4th year – Speech Sciences, Faculty of Arts
Favourite spot: Ridington Room in the Music, Art and Architecture Library

Q: What type of things do you look for in a study space?

I definitely look for somewhere that is quiet. I’ve tried different places, but this library is very quiet and everyone is focused. That’s a big part for me to also be focused and getting the energy from everyone around me.

“I had no idea a spot like this existed on campus!”

Q: How long did it take you to find this spot?

I just found out about this spot in my 4th year and I had no idea a spot like this existed on campus! As a commuter student, a lot of the time I spend on campus is just going to my classes. In my 4th year I felt like I needed to start taking advantage of the campus, so truthfully it took my 4 years to find a spot that I really liked, but I feel regretful that I didn’t look in my earlier years.

Q: What makes this spot special and why do you choose it over other locations?

I think this space is special because the atmosphere is very conducive to studying and the interior is very aesthetically pleasing. It doesn’t seem like a study space because of the way the room looks and when you look up from studying, it’s nice to look at the architecture.

“The atmosphere is very conducive to studying and the interior is very aesthetically pleasing.”

Q: Besides studying here, are there other resources you use?

I use the scanners; printers and all the things I don’t have at.

Q: What are your studying must-haves?

I definitely need all my chargers and I bring water. I don’t bring food because there’s lots of great places to eat on campus and it’s like a reward at the end of studying. I always bring my planner, so when I’m done studying I can plan out the rest of my day.

Q: What’s the best time of the day to study here?

I aim for times when people are going to go eat, those are prime times and sometimes you get lucky and get a spot too, so always just come and check.

Q: How much time do you spend here on average?

I try to spend at least 2 hours here, so I make the most out of the environment and studying time before I have to go commute.

“The library is a safe place for me to focus and be surrounded by other people that also want to be focused.”

Q: Has remote and hybrid learning changed how you study or how often you use the library?

My perception of the library has definitely changed since remote learning and it has made me value the library more because studying at home interferes with how I learn. Since everything I do outside of school is at home, when I mix those two together, the lines get blurred and I feel like I get a little bit more distracted. The library is a safe place for me to focus and be surrounded by other people that also want to be focused.
