UBC Library has become a member of Dryad, a nonprofit membership organization and provider of a well-established open data repository that makes research data discoverable, freely reusable and citable. As the first institutional member of Dryad in Canada, UBC Library joins a thriving global community of universities, research institutions and academic libraries all working together to promote data publishing, curation, and preservation.
With more than 600 UBC-authored datasets already available in Dryad, institutional membership provides UBC-affiliated researchers with access through their Campus-Wide Login (CWL) and unlimited dataset submissions at no cost.
Dryad accepts multiple file formats and assigns DOIs for data citation. Fitting into the manuscript submission workflow of its partner journals, Dryad simplifies data deposit, and employs professional curators to ensure the validity of files and descriptive information. Dryad also works with Zenodo to support and streamline deposit of software alongside data.
In recognition of the importance of Dryad to UBC researchers, UBC Library is sponsoring UBC’s Dryad membership. This membership complements the library-managed institutional data repository, UBC Dataverse. The library has also developed an open-source project to harvest and harmonize UBC datasets between Dryad and Dataverse, called Dryad2Dataverse, to consolidate and steward UBC research data for the future.

The UBC Library Research Commons is a multidisciplinary hub that supports research endeavours and provides training in research-enabling skills. We embrace both new and traditional exploratory scholarship and provide services, software, and expertise. Our services include expertise in digital scholarship, including geospatial and data services; a digital Scholarship Lab with powerful computers, for research, experimentation, collaboration, and work with big data, consultations and workshops for UBC researchers and once UBC returns to campus, a welcoming space for projects and presentations.
This project is part of UBC Library’s strategic direction to advance research, learning and scholarship.
