EDUCATION LIBRARY

The Education Library collections are comprised of children’s books, school texts, and multimedia for K-12, as well as, professional monographs, serials, microfiche and electronic resources dealing with teaching strategies, ideas and research in Education.  A high priority is placed on materials that reflect Canadian content and approach and materials pertaining to BC Education.  For more detailed information see the Branch website at http://education.library.ubc.ca/.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Education Librarian provides information and research support services to faculty, students, and the UBC community.  Liaison with assigned departments and units.  Participates in the development and assessment of the library collections. Maintains liaison with branch and library technical service units to ensure effectiveness and efficiency of current practices. Participates in activities supporting scholarly communications and flexible learning initiatives – directly through liaison role as well as through collaborative participation with UBC Library. Participates in the planning, development, delivery and assessment of instructional programming to support the information and digital literacy mandate of the Faculty of Education as well as that of the UBC Library.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required:

  • A graduate degree from an accredited school of Library, Archival and Information Science.
  • Experience and familiarity with education specific resources.
  • A commitment to providing responsive and innovative information services.
  • Ability to design and implement informational and instructional content both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A strong service commitment, flexibility, and willingness to assume a variety of assignments.

Preferred:

  • A Bachelor of Education or related academic background and experience in the education sector.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to Head of the Education Library; may represent the Head in their absence where appropriate. Works closely with all library employees within branch and in other units as necessary.  Builds relationships with faculty, students and other branch employees as part of Information Services, Liaison, and Collections duties and in a manner reflective of aspirational values of UBC Library. In consultation with the Head and in communication with Circulation and Office Manager, develops the duties and supervises the performance of GAA student employees in the branch.

DUTIES:

Information Services, Instruction & Liaison

In consultation with the Head, works collaboratively with other Education librarian(s) and other branch employees in commitment to ongoing growth, development and provision of responsive, inclusive, and impactful information services. Works collaboratively as part of the branch’s Librarian cohort to provide responsive liaison to assigned Faculty department/unit areas and to build overall branch capacity to serve all department/unit areas.

  • Provides information services to faculty, students, and the wider UBC community.  Advises and assists in difficult or extensive searches.
  • Works collaboratively with branch and other UBC Library technical service areas to ensure effective search, discovery and retrieval features of collection.
  • In collaboration with other Library employees and adhering to UBC Library Communications & Marketing standards, plans, develops, delivers and assesses orientation, promotional, and event-based initiatives.
  • Using the Library’s content management tools and adhering to UBC Library Communications & Marketing standards, develops and maintains a wide range of web-based resources, including the creation of web pages, instructional materials, subject and research guides, tutorials, and other learning objects. 
  • Initiates and maintains strong working relationships and collaboration with faculty in assigned liaison areas; communicates regularly, attends department or unit meetings as necessary.
  • Collaborates with faculty and works independently to provide responsive instruction to students, incorporating program-identified information and digital literacy outcomes for graduates; the flexible learning mandate of UBC; and other frameworks for information literacy in higher education.
  • Provides general and specialized research assistance and consultation to support knowledge production within the Faculty of Education.
  • Participates in the advancement and support of UBC Library scholarly communications initiatives, including copyright, open access activities, open education resources (OER), data management, and institutional repository.

COLLECTIONS

In consultation with the Head and faculty in liaison areas, works collaboratively to ensure the Education Library’s print, electronic, other materials and historic collections are reflective of current practices in education as well as allowing for extensive scholarly research.

  • Selects library materials reflecting the breadth and scope of scholarship in education including: professional literature, children’s and young adult reading and learning material, other classroom support materials reflecting current pedagogical practice in education.
  • Remains current in liaison area publications; especially those produced by UBC Faculty of Education.
  • Uses analytics and other assessment tools to develop the collection, including participating in ongoing monitoring and evaluation of collection holdings, and making decisions for retention or deselection based on branch collection development policies.
  • Participates in projects, both within the branch and in collaboration with other UBC library branches, designed to curate and preserve historic education material for use in education research.
  • Participates in ongoing development and revision of branch collection policies.

Current Awareness

Remains current with new literature and research developments in areas of specialization through scanning of journal and other professional literature, monitoring of electronic sources, etc. Maintains expertise in electronic information resources and technologies. Keeps current with changing professional expectations, services requirements, and developments in academic libraries. Keeps current with developments in education policy and professional practice, specifically in the province of BC, and in areas of special interest. Participates in a community of practice with other Education librarians, ensuring currency in subject specific scholarship, practice and collaborative librarianship.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT AND SALARY:

This position will be filled as a full-time, ongoing position. If eligible and qualified, the successful applicant may be appointed with a confirmed appointment. Otherwise, there will be an initial three-year probationary appointment.  Normally, such an appointment is reviewed by the end of the second year of the appointment, and a recommendation is made at that time to grant or not to grant a confirmed appointment.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
