Science Literacy Week 2016

 

Canada celebrates Science Literacy Week from September 19-25, 2016. Join UBC Library, in partnership with SFU and BCIT and attend one of these free events. Detailed information is available on the Library Guide to Science Literacy Week. 

No registration is required. All events take place at Woodward Library (2198 Health Science Malls, UBC Vancouver campus).

 

All Week

Great Reads
Borrow a science book that has inspired a UBC Faculty member.

Tell or show us what you love about science at the Scientifish, I ❤️ Science felt board or the Dress Like a Scientist photobooth.

Wednesday, September 21

11 am – 12 pm Wikipedia Workshop
12 pm – 3 pm Wikipedia Edit-a-thon 

2016 is the Wikipedia Year of Science. As part of this event, learn how to edit Wikipedia entries with Erin Fields (UBC Library) and Will Engle (Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology) in the Wikipedia Workshop. After, help contribute to Wikipedia entries on notable UBC women in science in an Edit-a-thon with others at SFU and BCIT Libraries. Learn to create a Wikipedia account before the Edit-a-thon and follow the hashtag #womensciwiki. Free pizza has been donated by Pie R Squared.

Thursday, September 22

12 pm – 1 pm IEEE Lunch & Learn 
Calling all computer science and engineering students! Join Michael Shapiro from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to learn about the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, a web database of more than 3 million scientific documents. Topics covered are available on the event page. Free Pie R Squared pizza will be provided by IEEE.

12 pm – 3 pm Science Expo
Enjoy an afternoon of science with the Open Science Network DIYBio, UBC Rapid, Beaty Biodiversity Museum, and more! Includes robots, arduino kits, button-making, and the fascinating science behind book preservation.

1 pm – 3 pm Living Library
In the Living Library, people stand in for books. Borrow a living book and learn about each book’s inspiring research.
