Alan Doyle, Katherine Miller and Jessica Woolman are this year’s recipients of UBC Library Staff Awards. The awards program was established to acknowledge the many ways in which Library staff contribute to their workplace through creativity, innovation, excellence and customer service.
Alan Doyle (University Records Manager) received the Employee Excellence Award in recognition of his valuable leadership in expanding the Records Management program across campus. Patience, perseverance and diplomacy are some of his key qualities that have attributed to the growth of the program and to the Library’s continued relevance to the University. Throughout Alan’s 13 years with UBC Library, he has contributed significantly to Library operations by virtue of his work ethic, hands-on approach and respectful and diplomatic participation on many committees and working groups. His nominator noted that Alan demonstrates “a creative and entrepreneurial approach” resulting in innovation that is “exciting, collaborative and sustainable.”
Katherine Miller (Reference Librarian), recipient of the Innovation Award, was recognized for her formidable efforts in developing and encouraging new and emerging online technologies for instruction at Woodward Library. Such innovations include the use of Blackboard’s Connect and Wimba/Collaborate to drive thousands of students to online tutorials, a clear and valuable service that has enhanced students’ use of Library collections. Katherine’s focus on open access, collaboration and sustainability has led to her knowledge being shared and re-used by other librarians to streamline processes for greater impact. In the words of her nominator, Katherine “pushes the limits for what technology can do, and makes gradual changes each year to provide a wealth of knowledge to all.”
Jessica Woolman (Web Communications Coordinator) was acknowledged with the Unsung Hero Award for her critical role in promoting the Library’s value through the development of content for the web, social media, digital signage and print. While her work is largely invisible, its impact can be found widely throughout campus. Whether in the form of news stories on central UBC channels, promotional giveaways, or electronic and print signage, Jessica has helped establish the Library as a forerunner in strategic communications and marketing. Her expertise in social media and analytics has given the Library a better understanding of how to engage with users and how web channels can enhance the Library’s reputation. “[Jessica’s] natural inclination, to be of service to her team, to branch/unit staff, to the Library, and to others on campus, has made her indispensable,” says her nominator.
The awards were handed out at our annual Library Staff Summer Recognition Luncheon at St. John’s College on June 24, 2015. Congratulations Alan, Katherine and Jessica!
