Documentation on Classical Ainu language is scarce as a result of the language not being reflected in written script. However, travellers to the Ainu regions in the late Edo period created modest dictionaries reproduced here.
The Ainu are an indigenous people that once lived in a large area of Japan, from the Tohoku region to Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and the Kurile Islands. Currently, most Ainu live in Hokkaido.
