UBC Library excels at ALPS LINK awards

By Glenn Drexhage on December 7, 2010

UBC Library enjoyed some stellar results at the recent 2010 ALPS LINK awards. (ALPS LINK is a partnership between the Academic Librarians for Public Service and the British Columbia Electronic Library Network. This year’s contest was entitled “Burning Needs,” and the theme was to share learning objects for librarians’ teaching needs. You can view the contest flyer here).

Charlotte Beck, a Reference Librarian at Woodward Library, won one of the top three prizes for her “Database Search Techniques – Sample of Clicker Questions.” Charlotte’s sample questions can be used with the new iClickers, which have become popular with UBC faculty and will soon be available in all UBC Library teaching labs. The awards committee noted that the questions can easily be adapted for use by librarians. Charlotte’s excellent work is available here.

All learning objects in the repository are licensed under the Creative Commons Share Alike license. Therefore, when librarians use her award-winning work, they also will share their new work in ALPS LINK.

Also of note, Bernadette Duffy – a UBC Library co-op student – received an Honourable Mention for her guide entitled “How to Search PubMed,” which is available here.

You can view a complete list of ALPS LINK winners here. Congratulations to all!

And last but not least, thank you to Lea Starr and the Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee at UBC Library, and Carole Compton-Smith at Douglas College, for their ongoing support of these awards and of collaboration between academic librarians.
