Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas at the Learning Centre

By Glenn Drexhage on September 21, 2010

Come join us for an afternoon of illustrative story telling, courtesy of Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. The stories of the trickster Raven, as told by Yahgulanaas, are what most people would call comics – and they are also fun, humorous and sometimes rude. Yahgulanaas takes traditional Haida stories and turns them into manga (Japanese-style comics). He has dropped the traditional rectangular boxes and voice balloons associated with the North American comics of Marvel and DC, and instead has developed a flowing style that uses a bold line stretched almost to the breaking point – a motif strongly associated with Haida art – to link the images in the narrative.

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas appears on Thursday, September 30 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lillooet Room (301) of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, located at 1961 East Mall on the UBC Vancouver campus.

To ensure a seat, please RSVP in advance: 604.827.4366 or ikblc-events@interchange.ubc.ca.

This event is presented by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and the Robson Reading Series, in partnership with UBC Library, UBC Canadian Studies, the UBC Learning Exchange and UBC Bookstore.
