The recent literacy event at Koerner Library, which involved students living in Koerner to raise funds for libraries in Nepal has gathered quite a bit of media attention. The event was held by the new UBC club called DREAM, or Discover the Reality of Educating All Minds, which is raising money for Room to Read, an international charity that will build the libraries.
Coverage of the event included stories from the US-based Chronicle of Higher Education and The Charlatan, a student newspaper at Ottawa’s Carleton University. Local media coverage is featured below.
“We feel really connected, all libraries do, by our mission around literacy,” says Leonora Crema, head of UBC Library’s Borrower Services.

Bernardo, a 22-year-old fourth year history and classical studies student, and Misra, an 18-year-old first year politics, philosophy and economics student, are living in the library for 10 days to raise money to construct five school libraries in Nepal. They’re members of a university club new to UBC called DREAM, or Discover the Reality of Educating All Minds, which is raising money for Room to Read, an international charity that will build the libraries. They’re two of eight students living in four university libraries across the country until Jan. 28.

One Vancouver enthusiast is Praveen Varshney, of Varshney Capital Corp. His contributions have built 11 libraries in India. Two more are Shu Lui and Richa Misra. Lui helped to organize a Live-in for Literacy, during which Misra and friend Anita Bernardo camped inside UBC’s Koerner Library for 10 days in January, collecting $5,000 in donations for Room to Read. “This is one way I can help,” said Misra.”
